If you have a variety of unwanted toxic items at home, the safest way to dispose of them is at a County Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) event.
Before you load up the car and make an appointment, read on for tips to make your experience a safe and successful one.
1. Make sure your waste is accepted – San Mateo County takes paint, pesticides, household chemicals, fluorescent lights, batteries, and other toxic products Products NOT accepted include electronics, radioactives, explosives, asbestos, and medical wastes.
2. Limit waste to 10 gallons or 50 pounds per appointment – Limits are the actual amount of remaining product, not the size of the container. Which means 20 half full, one-gallon paint containers would be equal to 10 gallons of waste. If you have more than the limit, you can make multiple appointments and trips to a drop-off event.
3. Enjoy a drive-thru experience – Safety always comes first when it comes to hazardous waste. That’s why it’s important to turn off your engine and stay in your car. So sit back and relax while technicians open your doors and pop your trunk to take your waste.
